Signs from the Future: A Philosophy of Warnings

Zabala, Santiago (UPF)

Humanities

At the end of October, my fifth monograph was published by Columbia University Press: "Signs from the Future. A Philosophy of Warnings." The book was immediately reviewed in the Los Angeles Review of Books and launch at the University College of London Warning Research Center. The Spanish and Italian translation rights were bought by Trotta and DeriveAprodi publishers. In this new book I argue we can think of philosophy as a warning, a call to heed ominous “signs from the future.” We are constantly being warned, but we seldom heed warnings. Too often warnings are dismissed—much like the artists, scientists, environmentalists, and intellectuals who deliver them. Why don’t we listen? My philosophy of warnings offers an alternative horizon of understanding beyond “the real” and “the normal,” and a philosophy of warnings helps us confront hidden emergencies through collective interpretation, listening, and action.
