Expanding the Canon of Medieval Philosophy
Humanities
The Catalan-German edition of Francesc Eiximenis' Regiment de la cosa pública is a milestone in the study of 14th-century political thought. The treatise, which stands out as an early example of republican thought, epitomizes the contribution of vernacular authors and texts to the history of philosophy. It is the first vernacular text to be included in "Herders Bibliothek der Philosophie des Mittelalters", which is one of the most prestigious collections of the history of medieval thought, comprising more than 60 bilingual editions, including Arabic, Hebrew, Latin and Syriac texts. This edition, with its in-depth study of the treatise, is a major step towards redefining the canon of medieval philosophy: it paves the way for a new understanding of the intellectual history of Europe as a multilingual republic of letters of medieval origin.
