ABSTRACT
Carlos Castillo (Santiago, Chile, 1977), “ChaTo” (they/them pronouns), is an ICREA Research Professor at Pompeu Fabra University, where he leads a research team on algorithmic equity and social computing. In this book, «Juegos de niñas y ñoños: una breve memoria (no) binaria» they intertwine their evolution as a scientist and as a non-binary person, constantly navigating between multiple professional, gender, and national dualities, without definitively situating themselves in any of them.
With stark honesty, ChaTo explores their internal struggles with early parenthood, masculinity, and traditional gender roles. Through an intimate and direct voice, the text explores their first encounters with computing to their current role as a researcher, revealing how the transition between identities has enriched both their personal life and their approach to science. It is a story about the value of inhabiting spaces of transition.
