The European Federation of Biochemical Societies (FEBS) has awarded the ICREA Research Professor and senior group leader at the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), Vivek Malhotra, the Theodor Bücher Lecture and Medal 2027.
This award is one of Europe’s most prestigious distinctions in the field of biochemistry and molecular biology, and it recognises researchers who have made fundamental contributions to understanding life at a molecular and cellular level. As part of the recognition, Malhotra will deliver a plenary lecture at the FEBS annual congress, one of Europe’s leading molecular biology events.
For more than three decades, Malhotra has contributed to understanding how cells organise their interiors and transport proteins to where they are needed. Among his contributions is the discovery and characterisation of the TANGO protein family, which enable cells to export large molecules, such as collagen and mucins. His research has opened new avenues for understanding processes related to diseases such as fibrosis, inflammatory disorders and some inherited metabolic diseases, and his laboratory at the CRG continues to study the mechanisms of cellular secretion and their relationship with ageing and disease.
