Friedrich Wöhler's “Artifical Synthesis of Urea” translated to Catalan
Experimental Sciences & Mathematics
As part of the outreach activities in which scientists should engage to highlight the importance of our discipline to both society and the broader scientific community, I have contributed to a volume of the "Clàssics de la Química" collection from the "Institut d'Estudis Catalans (IEC)". This initiative involves translating seminal contributions in organic chemistry from some of its pioneers into Catalan. Specifically, I worked on the translation of Friedrich Wöhler’s groundbreaking paper on the "Artificial Synthesis of Urea", which revolutionized chemistry in the 19th century and laid the foundation for Organic Chemistry as a distinct scientific discipline. In this volume, we not only translate the original text but also place it in the broader context of modern chemical understanding, examining its significance through a contemporary lens. We provide critical insights into the scientific landscape at the time of its publication, highlighting how Wöhler’s groundbreaking discoveries challenged prevailing theories and laid the foundation for organic chemistry as a distinct scientific discipline. Additionally, we explore the far-reaching impact of his work, tracing its influence on subsequent research and its role in shaping fundamental principles in chemistry. By offering historical context, scientific analysis, and discussion of its long-term legacy, this volume aims to illustrate why Wöhler is regarded as one of the founding figures of organic chemistry.
