Short biography
Joshua Shepherd is a philosopher of mind and action and ICREA Research Professor at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He earned his Ph.D. at Florida State University and held fellowships at Oxford before joining Carleton University, Ottawa, and leading the ERC-funded project "Rethinking Conscious Agency." He is the author of Consciousness and Moral Status (Routledge, 2018) and The Shape of Agency: Control, Action, Skill, Knowledge (Oxford University Press, 2021). His research spans agency, consciousness, and creativity; his current project, funded by Templeton World Charity Foundation, examines the cognitive structure of creative intelligence. A CIFAR Azrieli Global Scholar (2019–2022), he now co-directs a CIFAR Horizon Network, "Adolescence and the Civic Self," with Katherine McAuliffe, studying the social-cognitive roots of civic values and identity in adolescence.
