Short biography
Fred Halliday was born in Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland, in 1946. He was educated at the Marist School, Dundalk, and Ampleforth College Yorkshire, before taking an undergraduate degree at Oxford (1967), an MSc at the School of Oriental Studies, London ( 1969), and a PhD at the London School of Economics (1985). From 1985 to 2008 he was Professor of International Relations at LSE, teaching International Relations theory, and the international relations of the LSE, as well as holding a range of administrative positions, at the School. Since April 2008 he has been ICREA Research Professor at IBEI.
Research interests
In addition to taking part in the teaching and research activity of IBEI and other institutions in the Catalan higher education system concerned with International Relations, Professor Halliday will be continuing with research in his two main areas of interest, the theory of International Relations, and the international relations of the Middle East: he is currently working on a study of contemporary forms of internationalism and cosmopolitanism, and on two book length studies of the relationship between politics and culture in the Middle East.
