Swart, Marcel

ICREA Research Professor at UdG (Universitat de Girona). Experimental Sciences & Mathematics

Marcel Swart obtained his PhD in Groningen (NL) with a study on copper proteins. In his subsequent post-doc positions, he worked on iron enzymes and DNA. For the latter, he was awarded the “Young Scientist Award for ICCMSE 2005”. Since May 2006, he is working at the Institut de Química Computacional (University of Girona). He was promoted to ICREA Research Professor on September 1 (2009).

He has published over 80 papers in peer-reviewed international scientific journals, which have been cited >1550 times (H-index 23). He has been invited to form part of tribunals for Master and PhD ceremonies in The Netherlands and in Spain, is reviewer for ANEP and NWO (NL), has formed part of evaluation committees for ANEP, and acts as referee for >20 international scientific journals. He has received funding from the Spanish government for starting his own research group from 2009 onwards, which was renewed in 2011 (including a PhD-student).

Research Interests

He works in the field of theoretical (bio)inorganic and supramolecular chemistry, and works on fullerenes, metalloproteins and enzymes, and DNA. The effect of (transition) metal ions on reactivity, selectivity and chemical bonding is one of the main topics in these studies.
