I graduate at the Universitat Autònoma of Barcelona in 1986. During the years 1988-1992 I was a predoctoral fellow (FPI) from the Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona where I did my Ph.D in Physics. In 1993 I moved to the University of Oxford, first as a research fellow and then I got the Fleming fellowship. In 1996 I moved to Saclay, Paris as an europeoan Post-Doctoral Research Fellow and in 1998 to Leibninz University, Hannover Germnay where I did my habilitation and I got a Professor Assistant position. Since 2005 I am an ICREA Research Professor.
My research interests comprise quantum information theory, quantum optics in particular strong atom-laser interactions and more recently ultracold gases and condensed matter. Presently I am working in the interplay between quantum information and condensed matter. My research is quite interdisciplinary and in close collaboration with experimental groups.

My research belongs to the area of Quantum Information, Atomic Physics and more recently Condensed Matter Physics. On one hand we study the properties that atoms frozen to very low temperatures display. Ultracold atomic gases permit to study in a very clean way a rich variety of systems which appear in Nature but whose properties are very difficult to observe and understand. On the other hand, I am also involved in the mathematical description of entanglement, arguably the most distinct feature of quantum physics. Taking advantage of the quantum properties of matter, we can engineer more powerful ways of process and distribute information and build in a near future a quantum computer, able to perform tasks that classical computer cannot.
