Quidant, Romain

ICREA Research Professor at ICFO (Institut de Ciències Fotòniques). Technology & Engineering

Romain Quidant received his PhD in Physics in 2002 from the University of Dijon (France). Since then he has worked in Barcelona at ICFO within the field of nanoplasmonics. In 2006, he was appointed junior Professor and group leader of the Plasmon NanoOptics group at ICFO. In 2009, he was appointed tenure Professor both at ICFO and ICREA. The same year he was also awarded the Fresnel prize from the European Physics Society for his outstanding contribution to the field of plasmon optics. In 2010 he received a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) and was awarded the prizes from both the Ciutat de Barcelona and the Fundació Princep de Girona. R. Quidant is co-author of about 85 peer-reviewed articles in international journals, delivered more than 35 invited talks at international conferences and has been involved in different national and European projects. Since 2010, he serves as the coordinator of the European FP7-STREP project “SPEDOC”.

Research Interests

Romain Quidant carries out his research at ICFO- The Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona where he leads the group of “Plasmon nanooptics”. His research focuses on the study of the optical properties of metal nano-structures, known as surface plasmons and their use in the elaboration of future miniaturized optical functionalities and devices. In particular, his group investigates news strategies to control light and heat at the nanometer scale for biomedical applications, including early detection and photothermal therapy of cancer. Other research interests are optical trapping, nonlinear optics and quantum optics.
