Research Interests

(A) Basic Virology:
Motivation: Genetic variation is a key problem for the treatment of viral infections by antiviral drugs and for the development of effective vaccines. Understanding the driving forces of virus variation will help to design novel antiviral strategies.
Aims: To understand basic mechanisms driving HIV and HCV evolution and to identify new targets for antiviral therapy.

(B) Translational Research in Biomedicine:
Motivation: T cells are an essential part of the human defense system against microbial pathogens. Their quantity and their dynamic responsiveness may correlate to disease state and disease progression.
Aims: To analyze the dynamic responsiveness of lymphocytes in different infections with the objective to use these data for the generation of pathogenesis models. We focus on infections with HIV, M. tuberculosis and CMV, as well as in transplant patients that are immunosuppressed by their medication.
