Tomas Marques-Bonet was an undergraduate at the University of Barcelona (2000). After a few years outside academia, he was a graduate student at the Universitat Pompeu Fabra, where he obtained a PhD in Biology (2007). He moved to Seattle (US) as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington, under the supervision of Dr. Evan E. Eichler. He entered the Universitat Pompeu Fabra in 2010 as a Ramón y Cajal researcher and was awarded with an ERC starting Grant from the European Union. He was appointed ICREA Research Professor at the UPF in October 2011. Currently he is Professor of Genetics at the UPF, where he leads a research group in Primate Genomics within the Program of Evolutionary Biology and Complex Systems of the Department of Experimental and Heath Sciences. He is also part of the IBE, Institut de Biologia Evolutiva (UPF/CSIC).

The efforts to understand variation at genomic level in the human species rely somehow on the parallel knowledge of many human genomes and the characterization of genome of primates, our closest relatives. We can only understand the origins of genomic variants and phenotypical differences among species if we can model variation within species and compare it to a proper perspective with the differences among species.
The line of research in my group is centered in the discovery of genome polymorphisms within humans and the great ape species. In so doing, I am aiming to create an integrated view of genomic variation and evolution by studying changes in the composition, frequency, size and location at every major branchpoint of human divergence from other primates. The results of these analyses will provide fundamental insight into the evolutionary variation of these regions among primates with multiple potential contributions to the understanding of human evolution and disease.
