López-Bigas, Núria

ICREA Research Professor at UPF (Universitat Pompeu Fabra). Life & Medical Sciences

Nuria Lopez-Bigas has a PhD in Biology from the University of Barcelona and has expertise in Medical Genetics and in Computational Biology and Bioinformatics. During her PhD work, she studied the molecular causes of hereditary deafness at the group of Xavier Estivill. Next she moved to the European Bioinformatics Institute in Hinxton (Cambridge, UK) to work on Computational Genomics at the group of Christos A. Ouzounis and then at the Center for Regulatory Genomics (Barcelona) at the group of Roderic Guigó. Nuria joined the University Pompeu Fabra in April 2006 with a Ramón y Cajal Position and from then she leads the Biomedical Genomics Research Group (http://bg.upf.edu). Nuria Lopez-Bigas was appointed ICREA Research Professor at the UPF in October 2011.

Research Interests

The main line of research in our group is focused on the study of cancer from a genomics perspective. We work on the development of methods to identify genes and pathways involved in the development of cancer by integrating cancer genomics data.

Thanks to the advance of next generation sequencing technologies (NGS) it is currently possible to sequence the complete genome (or exome) of numerous cancer cells obtaining a comprehensive catalog of genomic alterations in cancer cells. However the identification of alterations directly involved in the development of the tumor is challenging. We are interested in the development of computational approaches to analyse NGS cancer genomes data to identify genes and pathways driving tumorigenesis.

We are also interested in the study of the involvement of specific pathways in cancer, in particular we are currently collaborating with experimental groups for the study of pRB/JARID1 pathway, Hippo and E2F pathways.
