Mario Giampietro works on integrated assessment of sustainability. Using new concepts developed in Complex Systems Theory, he has developed an innovative scientific approach that can integrate quantitative analyses referring simultaneously to technical, economic, demographic, social and ecological variables. In this way, it becomes possible to characterize, in relation to multiple criteria of performance, the interaction of socio-economic systems and ecological systems across multiple scales using integrated sets of indicators, which can be chosen “à la carte” by social actors.
