Doblas Reyes, Francisco Javier

ICREA Research Professor at IC3 (Institut Català de Ciències del Clima). Experimental Sciences & Mathematics

I started doing research on climate variability at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid (Spain) in 1992. Following the obtention of my PhD, I moved to Météo-France, in Toulouse (France), for my first postdoc of two years. I worked there in climate forecasting for the first time. This period was followed by another postdoc of one year at the Instituto Nacional de Técnica Aerospacial (Torrejón, Spain) in 1999, before I moved to the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (Reading, UK) where I worked on seasonal climate forecasting in a couple of groundbreaking projects (DEMETER, ENSEMBLES) that led to the development of operational products on climate information. I am currently working at the Institut Català de Ciències del Clima (IC3) in Barcelona, where I lead the Climate Forecasting Unit. I am the author of more than 50 peer-review papers and supervisor of three PhD students.

Research Interests

Global climate is highly variable, which implies that there is much more to understand than just climate change. Climate prediction aims at predicting the variations of climate at different time scales, ranging from one month to several years beyond the start of the forecast. I use an Earth model system to explore the limits of the forecast quality over different parts of the globe, in particular over Africa, South America and Southern Europe. Improving the application of this climate information to different socioeconomic sectors is the final target.
