Stefan Bromley (1971) is an ICREA Research Professor and heads the “Nanoclusters and Nanostructured Materials” group which forms part of the Institut de Química Teòrica i Computacional at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). He obtained his PhD in Computational Physics (University of Southampton, UK) in 1997 and has held research posts in the UK (Postdoctoral fellow, Royal Institution), the Netherlands (Associate Professor, Delft University of Technology) and Spain (Ramon y Cajal fellow, UB). He has published over 95 ISI-listed research articles, 5 book chapters and has given over 35 invited talks.
His group focuses on understanding the structure, growth and properties of nanoclusters of technologicaly important inorganic materials, using a range of computational modelling methods. Inspired by their novel size-dependent characteristics, the group also designs new materials and nanostructures using nanoclusters as virtual building blocks.

With the constant technological drive for device miniaturisation materials are increasingly being utilised on scales approaching only a few 100s or 10s of atoms (the so-called ¨nanoscale¨). Materials with nanoscale dimensions often display novel size-dependent properties as compared to materials at everyday length scales. Using powerful supercomputers and sophisicated modelling methods, my research aims at obtaining a detailed predictive understanding of the structural, electronic and chemical properties of technologically important materials at the nanoscale.
