Prof. Altankov accomplished his medical eduacation in 1974 (Medical Institute in Varna, Bulgaria). After obtaining his PhD he is invited in the Academy of Sciences (Institute of Biophysics, Sofia) where he grew up to Professor in Cell Biology and head of Department “Cell Adhesion” . He was also Research Director of the Institute. Prof. Altankov is an interdisciplinary oriented scientist, acting in the frame of different national and international projects. 1991-1993 he is Visiting Scientist in Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. During the last decade he spent more than 7 years as gest scientist in Germany (Humboldt University, GKSS Research Center at Teltow, UPC Barcelona etc.) performing harvesting research in the field of cell-biomaterials interaction. Since April 2007 he is appointed as ICREA Research Professor in the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalunia heading a new research line: "Molecular Dynamics at Cell-Biomaterials Interface".

Prof. Altankov is a well recognized scientist in the field of cell-biomaterials interaction and tissue engineering. On that topic he published more than 70 original papers and filed number of patents. As ICREA Research Professor in the Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia he is developing a new research line “Molecular dynamics at cell-materials interface” that will help us to understand the physiological mechanisms that determine biocompatibility of materials.
