Aliaga Alcalde, Núria

ICREA Researcher at UB (Universitat de Barcelona). Experimental Sciences & Mathematics

I the course of the last years, I did complete my doctorate in the University of Indiana working with Professor George Christou (USA). Afterward, I carried out research studies as a post-doctoral assistant at the Max Planck Institut für Bioanorganische Chemie (MPI) with Professor Karl Wieghardt (Germany) and later coursed my second post-doctorate at the Leiden University with Professor Jan Reedijk (The Netherlands).
In September 2007, I started working as an ICREA JUNIOR researcher in the group of Professor Joan Ribas in the Department of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Barcelona.
Since last August (2009) I am also a member of a new group at the same department called "Grup de Magnetisme i Molècules Funcionals" (GMMF). GMMF has been recognized by the Generalitat de Catalunya and has attained a Grant from the Spanish Ministery (CTQ2009-06959). Here, I do perform my projectwork in the areas of magnetism, supramolecular chemistry and multifunctional materials.

Research Interest

The main goal of my research is the rational design of metallo-aggregates and self-assembled systems with a variety of functions based on magnetic properties, light responsiveness, biomedical applications, fluorescence and redox properties, among others.

This aim comprises the synthesis of advance molecular materials containing 3d/4f metals (paramagnetic response) coordinated to organic groups (conjugated, beta-diketone ligands) which nature does also present relevant features (fluorescence, semi-conductivity,...) and later, the study of the behavior of these systems.

The useful properties of the final arrays may lead to a varity of applications, as for example: in sensors, compact information storage devices for next-generation computers, catalysts in industrial processes and medical applications (such as implants, contrast agents for CAT scans,…).
