Albà Soler, Mar

ICREA Research Professor at IMIM (Institut Municipal d'Investigació Mèdica). Life & Medical Sciences

After my PhD I switched from the wet lab to the computers. In 1997 I enrolled in the MSc of Bioinformatics and Molecular Modeling at Birkbeck College (London), while doing postdoctoral research on computational genomics in the group of John Hancock at the MRC Clinical Research Centre. This period was key to define my future career. I then undertook another postdoctorate in the group of Paul Kellam, at University College London, working on virus comparative genomics. Back in Barcelona in 2001 I joined the crew of bioinformaticians at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) and the Municipal Institute of Medical Research (IMIM), working closely with Roderic Guigó and Jose Castresana. In 2002 I started my own research group on evolutionary genomics at the Research Unit of Biomedical Informatics (UPF-IMIM).

Research Interest

I coordinate the group in Evolutionary Genomics (evolutionarygenomics.imim.es) at the Research Unit of Biomedical Informatics (IMIM-UPF). We use computational methods to learn about the evolution and function of genes and genomes, focusing on mammals and other vertebrates. We perform research on the rate of change of genes from different time periods and its relationship to natural selection, the evolution of low complexity regions, and the comparative analysis of gene expression regulatory regions.
