I studied Biology at the University of Barcelona (UB), and obtained a PhD at UB in 1997. Then I moved to London, where I enrolled in the MSc of Bioinformatics and Molecular Modeling at Birkbeck College (London), while doing postdoctoral research on computational genomics in the group of John Hancock at the MRC Clinical Research Centre. This period was key to define my future career in the field of genomics. In 1999 I initiated a second postdoctorate in the group of Paul Kellam, at University College London, working on virus comparative genomics. At the end of 2001 I went back to Barcelona to teach Bioinformatics and in 2002 I started my own research group on evolutionary genomics at the Research Program on Biomedical Informatics (Universitat Pompeu Fabra - Institut Municipal d'Investigació Mèdica).

I coordinate the group in Evolutionary Genomics (evolutionarygenomics.imim.es) at IMIM-UPF (Barcelona). We study the mechanisms of molecular evolutionary innovation affecting the genomes of humans and other animal species. We use computational methods to understand how novel genes are formed, how they evolve over time, and how they acquire new functions.
