Lewenstein, Maciej Andrzej

ICREA Research Professor at ICFO (Institut de Ciències Fotòniques). Experimental Sciences & Mathematics

Maciej Lewenstein was born on 21.09.55. After graduating from Warsaw Univ. in 1978 he joined the Centre for Theoretical Physics of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Warsaw, where he remained for 15 years, becoming a professor in 1993. He finished his PhD in Essen in 1983 and habilitated in 1986 in Warsaw. He has spent several sabbaticals and long term visits in Essen, at Harvard University with the Nobel laureate, Roy J. Glauber, at Commisariat a l’Energie Atomique in Saclay and at Joint Institute for Laboratory Astrophysics at Boulder. In 1995 he joined the faculty of CEA in Saclay, and in 1998 he became full professor at the Leibniz University in Hannover, where he remained until 2005. In 2005 he moved to Spain as ICREA Research Professor to lead the quantum optics theory group at the Institut de Ciències Fotòniques in Castelldefels. His interests range from traditional quantum optics, through physics of cold gases and quantum information to physics of ultra intense laser fields.

Research Interests

Maciej Lewenstein is a theoretical physicist. If one thing should characterize his research and interest it would be diversity. He is and has been working on and contributing successfully to very different branches of physics and other sciences. In particular part of his work deals with purely mathematical questions related to the foundations of physics, such as the nature of correlations in quantum systems. On the other side, Lewenstein has worked on models of human cognition and human voting behaviour. Recently his interests mainly focus on quantum many body physics of ultracold matter, quantum information theory, quantum simulators, quantum open systems, statistical physics, Brownian motion theory. In all of his research theoretical physics and its methods set the methodology and standards. At ICFO Maciej Lewenstein is heading a 22 people team mainly working on the above mentioned subjects, as well as on quantum optics, ultra-cold gases, and atto-physics.
